The Holy Spirit and Body Life

Series 5 / 5 Holy Spirit

You, the Holy Spirit, and Body life:

The Spirit baptizing and gifting

Selected Scripture

Then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocateto be with you forever –the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it does not see him or know him.But you know him, because he resideswith you and will be in you (John 14:16-17).

These words from the Lord Jesus raised the expectations of His discouraged disciples. Something new and wonderful was about to happen. In just a few days, when the Spirit would come, He would live inside them. Unlike their Master who was about to leave them, the Spirit’s presence would be permanent. This had never happened before. Note even with the greatest leaders of the Old Testament.

The Holy Spirit’s ministry in our lives can be confusing. The religious lingo seems so unfamiliar—indwelling, sealing, baptism, gifting, filling, walking. How do you know if any of these have happened? When should I expect it? How will I know?

Dividing the ministries of the Holy Spirit into three primary categories helps us appreciate their importance in our Christian experience:

¨      The Holy Spirit and eternal life—indwelling and sealing.

¨      The Holy Spirit and everyday life—filling by and walking in the Spirit.

¨      The Holy Spirit and body life—baptizing and gifting.

When it comes to body life, an understanding of the baptism and gifting of the Spirit is absolutely critical to experiencing the joy and confidence of living in community. The purpose of the Holy Spirit’s ministries during the church age is to glorify Christ (John 16:14) by building His body—the church.

Baptizing and Gifting: You and your fellow believers have all the spiritual power you will ever need to glorify Christ by loving and serving Him and one another in the church!

Series 2 / 5 Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit in Salvation

“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you forever” (John 14:16-17).

Sadly, today many believers are confused by the ministry of the Spirit in their lives. The religious lingo seems so unfamiliar—indwelling, sealing, baptism, gifting, filling. How do you know if any of these have happened? When should I expect it? How will I know.

We ended the far at Church of the Open Door with a 3-week mini-series on the Holy Spirit. Dividing the ministries of the Holy Spirit into three primary categories helps us appreciate their importance in our Christian experience:

¨      The Holy Spirit and eternal life—indwelling and sealing.

¨      The Holy Spirit and body life—baptizing and gifting.

¨      The Holy Spirit and everyday life—filling and walking.

At the heart of these ministries lies the work of the Spirit in the divine transaction which initiates and guarantees eternal life to all who believe in the Lord Jesus.

My Gut or His Spirit?

Get Me Out of Here God!

All I wanted to do was get out of there.

Instead of being the time of encouragement I was seeking, the conference was just a discouraging gathering of pastors and church leaders trying to impress one another with how successful or large their churches were. The speakers weren’t anyone to write home about either.  To make matters worse, it seemed those listening were almost as impressed with their ideas as the speakers were themselves!

But, I couldn’t leave because I had brought another pastor with me and he, well, let’s just say, he would be one of those writing home about the conference!

I could, however, sneak away to the neighborhood coffee shop.

So, off I went anticipating a good cup of coffee and some quiet time with Steinbeck.

That’s when I saw him.

“That’s all I need,” I muttered to myself as I watched him walk towards me. “One more guy I went to seminary with wanting to get together to talk about himself or the book he just read.”

I decided to avoid eye contact and veer left . . . a hard left.

No, Ed. You’re Staying

But God wouldn’t allow it.  He seemed to be telling me to say hi to this “acquaintance.”

I protested. “No, Lord. I’m too tired. I just want some time alone . . . to lose myself in Tortilla Flat. Don’t make me do this.”

God won the argument.

So I walked up to this guy I vaguely remembered from the weight room at Dallas Theological Seminary. “Hi, I’m Ed. Didn’t we go to DTS together?”

“Yeah, I think I remember you, Ed. Yeah, the weight room.  I’m Kevin Butcher.”

I shook hands with the man who would become my closest friend in ministry. His sustaining friendship these past 25 years has made every difference in my life.

He officiated at two of my children’s marriages, flew to California the night I almost died in 2000 to be with Judy and to tell Church of the Open Door not to worry because Jesus was still good.

Anyone who knows me well knows that the story of my life contains many paragraphs (and some entire chapters!) with Kevin Butcher as the main character.

So…here’s the question–was it my gut feeling or God’s Spirit that wouldn’t let me avoid Kevin at the pastor’s conference?

I’ve learned over the years that what a lot of people call a gut feeling is, for the disciple of Christ, the indwelling Spirit’s guidance.

Romans 8:9 says that everyone who has Christ is indwelled by God’s Spirit.

The older I get the more I realize that God wants me to live as if it’s true.

Question: Do you have a story to tell about a time when you knew the indwelling Spirit of the Living God was telling you to do something  . . . and when you did it, it  made every difference in your life?

Let me know about that time . . . I’d love to hear it!

Walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-26)

Walk in the Spirit!

Galatians 5:16-26

“But I say, live by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh.”

(Galatians 5:16)

In 49 AD a delegation of Judean religious teachers came to the predominately Gentile church at Syrian Antioch and started teaching the Christians that those who were not circumcised as followers of the Law of Moses could not be saved from their sin by simple belief in Jesus (Acts 15:1). They were part of a conspiracy to undermine the Gospel of grace sending emissaries of the lie to the daughter churches planted by the church at Antioch (Acts 15:23).

The most vulnerable to the lie were the fledgling assemblies of the Roman province of Galatia. Paul and Barnabas had planted these churches on their first missionary journey (Acts 13-14). Paul’s response is swift and strong. He will not tolerate this false gospel—that works are essential to salvation—to take root in the lives of these new Christians and churches. On the eve of the Jerusalem Council, Paul writes his most passionate letter, reminding the church of the real basis of our salvation.

In the first section of the epistle proper, 1:11-2:21, Paul defended his apostleship. In 3:1-4:31 the Apostle clarifies the implications of justification and sanctification by faith and why it’s true. His final section (5:1-6:10) demonstrates how this grace works in life. Grace works through liberty. Christ set us free to demonstrate His righteousness in ways that transcend any enslaving set of rules or moral codes (5:1-12). This liberty isn’t so that we can indulge the self-centered desires of our flesh as we did before we trusted in Christ. Using our freedom in that way will cause us to lose our inheritance in the coming kingdom (5:13-21). We’ve been set free to walk in the Spirit (5:16-18) so that we can display Christ’s righteousness through the fruit of the Spirit (5:22-26). But even this transformation isn’t about us; it’s about Christ and others. What we’ve really been set free to do is to love and serve others (6:1-10).

In one of the most important passages on the Christian life in the Bible, Paul explains the grace alternative to the law. By walking in the Spirit, Christians overcome the self-indulgent sins of the flesh and express their faith through love, a love that glorifies God by displaying the character of Christ:

Walk in the Spirit to glorify God in your liberty!

I. Live by the Spirit and you will defeat the flesh, secure your inheritance in the Kingdom, and glorify God (5:16-26).

A. Command to Live by the Spirit: Live by the Spirit to defeat the flesh instead of living as if you’re under the law (5:16-18).

1. Simple Imperative: To “walk in the Spirit” is to live moment by moment submissively trusting in the Holy Spirit’s strength and desires rather than the self-indulgent flesh’s strength and desires.

2. Amazing Promise: When we do what the Holy Spirit is telling us to do we will not do what the flesh is telling us to do.

3. Constant Conflict: During our days on earth the Spirit and our flesh are always opposed to one another. This means that we are always conflicted, even when we walk in the Spirit. But we must trust the Spirit enough to do what He wants us to do.

4. The Christian Alternative: We are led by the Spirit rather than living under the law.

B. Warning Against Living by the Flesh: Those Christians who live according to the self-centered flesh rather than the other-centered Spirit will be disinherited (5:19-21).

1. The works of the flesh are obvious! Notice that the common thread to all these acts is that they are self-indulgent and against others. They are the opposite of the selfless love Paul has been teaching in this section (5:6, 13, 14).

2. I don’t believe this is warning Christians against losing salvation for the same reasons stated before (See notes on Galatians 5:1-6). An added reason is that it seems the Galatians, who he calls “brothers and sisters” are still engaged in some of these communal sins (5:26).

3. I believe this is a warning to true believers that if we persistently grieve and suppress the Spirit in lifestyles characterized by flesh-dominance, we lose rewards in the Millennial Kingdom (1 Corinthians 3:1-15; 2 Timothy 2:11-13; Revelation 2:26-27, 3:1).

4. Though I don’t believe this is warning against losing our salvation, it does provide a diagnostic tool to help others. It’s hard to give someone assurance who is living this type of lifestyle un-conflicted! I would want to examine this person’s belief to see if they really have trusted in Christ.

C. Result of Living by the Spirit: Those Christians who live by the Spirit display Christ’s selfless love, not by following the law but by having crucified the flesh (5:22-24).

1. This is the true fruit of liberty—love. We have been set free to live by the Spirit so that we can love with the type of love characterized by the eight characteristics listed (22-23).

2. Since the law was given to constrain the flesh, there’s no need for the law when we live by the Spirit (23b).

3. When we trusted in Christ the power of the flesh in our lives was crucified (24).

D. Recap and Specific Warning to the Galatians: If you’re led by the Spirit you’ll live by loving one another well, not the way you’re treating one another according to the reports I’ve heard (25-26).

II. How Grace Works in Real Life: Liberated Christians living by the Spirit glorify God by their Christlike love.

A. God’s Spirit within you is always shouting, “Live for Christ and others!” Whenever you’re wondering what God wants you to do, know that His Spirit is telling you to do the selfless and loving thing. See also Philippians 2:13.

B. Your flesh within you is always shouting, “Live for yourself!” Whenever you’re wondering what God doesn’t want you to do, know that your flesh is telling you to do the self-centered and unloving thing. See also Colossians 3:11-15.

C. But, you have the spiritual resources to do what the Spirit is telling you to do. Christ’s work on the Cross rendered the flesh powerless. When you trusted in Him your flesh was crucified. See also Colossians 2:11-12 and Romans 6:14.

D. If you feel as if it’s impossible to do what the Spirit’s telling you to do, something’s wrong. Have you trusted in Christ? Are you living in community?

Spiritual Life Minute: Lonely Sinners

My understanding of the ministry of the Holy Spirit in my life is that when I sin, He makes me miserable.

Not because God’s ticked off at me, but because He’s grieved.

Why is He grieved? Because God’s love always wants what is best for me. And sin never leads to anything good.

So it’s a gift of grace, this misery. It’s God’s tender mercies wooing me back into His love. All I need to do is get honest with Him, and rely on His power to move toward what He knows is good for me.

But it’s still misery.

I can only think of one way to make the misery worse…

…To try to take care of your sin by yourself.

There’s no more miserable creature on earth than a Christian with a secret life, trying to fix himself or herself without God and apart from other Christians.

You may think your hidden life is a secret, but God knows all about it.

Want to escape the misery?

Get honest with God and a few trusted Christian friends. If you take that step of trusting obedience, His love will flood out your lonely misery and you will know the joy of intimate friendship with Him and His redeemed community.

Question: Why do you feel most Christians avoid living in community?

Wednesday in 1 John 3:24-4:16: Holy Spirit or Evil Spirits?!

Series 56 / 86 First John

Week 10: Live Like a New Creation!

(1 John 3:24-4:16)

Our tenth week of daily devotions in the Book of First John center on the John’s discourse on resisting the world. You’re going to need your Bible and I’ve provided the Study Notes on this website that you can either bookmark, or print. Be sure to scroll down to the notes outlining and commenting on the 1 John 3:24-4:16. Or you may want to download the word document: 1jn3.24-4.16nn I hope this helps those of you who are committed to journaling this year.

Wednesday: 1 John 3:24-4:16–Spirit and spirits, a warning!

As you have probably already notices, the new idea of God abiding in us is the “bracketing “ truth and the subject of this section. Read the first (3:24) and last (4:16) sentences of this inclusio to make sure to put this section in perspective. Not only are we to abide in Christ to have confidence at His coming, we should also be living the kind of life that makes God comfortable abiding in us (He abides in us, God in him). This mutual abiding is the crowning glory and the richest experience of eternal life available to the child of God.

The degree to which the indwelling God has access to our lives—here primarily described by the Spirit’s indwelling—the more we will know the joy of fellowship now (1:3) and confidence at His coming (2:28). As you read through the verses between the bracketing verses (3:24; 4:16), underline the word beloved (NKJV) or the phrase Dear friends (NIV). This divides the teaching on just how to experience God’s abiding presence in our lives into three sections:

  • Warning: Be careful to distinguish the work of the Holy Spirit from the work of evil spirits speaking through false prophets in the spirit of Antichrist  (4:1-6).
  • True Christian love comes from God, not from believers (4:7-10).
  • God’s love for us motivates us to love one another in Spirit and in truth (4:11-15).

Any mention of the Holy Spirit today causes me to pause to explain to believers to be discerning about His ministry. With so many false teachers claiming His power in what they display in churches and on television, we need to know how to distinguish between truth and error.

John felt this same tension in the First Century. He devotes six verses to sound a parenthetical warning because he knew that Christians are prone to naively think that any manifestation of some spiritual presence is from God.

Not Their Works But Their Words!

His test is clearly not their works but their words—what do they say about the Lord Jesus? Read 1 John 4:1-6 and 14-16 two times and then complete this sentence:

Anyone claiming that his or her power comes from the Holy Spirit will say that Jesus is the Christ (Savior from God) who has come in the and that He is the Son of .

John did not say that every spirit that denies Jesus, but every spirit that does not confess Jesus! False teachers can manipulate words to mask their true beliefs about Jesus. So ask them to confess that Jesus is the Christ who came in the flesh and that He is the Son of God. If they cannot confess that, don’t walk run from them, their teachings, their tapes, their books, their followers, and their evil antichrist spirit!

This Just Isn’t Working!

hairpull4I’ve had it with Christianity!

When Christians get caught up in a system of works righteousness, failure is their only ultimate option. It all feels good, and holy… and even smug at the beginning.

“We’re the Christians who don’t do this, or this, or this, or this. We’re the ones with self-discipline. We’re the most committed, the least sinful, the truly spiritual.”

If they were totally honest, they would admit that it starts to unravel the moment they begin trying to restrain their sin. Even as they are following all the formulas and attending all the meetings, they can’t hide their dirty little secrets from themselves:
