A few years ago millions of dead fish were floating in the harbor at Redondo Beach here in Southern California. It happens occasionally. The cause? Lack of oxygen in the water, probably due to an algae bloom.
Sometimes I wonder if we’ll see the same phenomenon among Christians. Millions of dead in the water lives. The cause? Lack of grace in the atmosphere of our churches, probably due to a legalism bloom.
Why do I wonder if this will happen in our churches? Because I’m teaching through the Book of Galatians many times over the past 30 years. I’m appalled at the number of deeply wounded Christians struggling with the message, the liberty, and the wonder of God’s grace in Christ Jesus! We’ve taught believers to mistrust grace. What a tragedy!
3 Reasons Why Christians Leaders Don’t Teach Grace:
Biblical Illiteracy: If the people teaching the Bible cling to the popular method of “one verse and three moving stories” in fifteen minutes sermonettes, they don’t need to know much about your Bible. And if you don’t know your Bible, you’re going to gravitate toward works-righteosness.
Control: Legalism works in the short run. All you have to do is scare people with hell-fire and judgment and you can really move them to attend church, give, and look good on the outside.
Fear: Leaders know what will happen if they don’t preach works. But they’re afraid of what might happen if they start talking about Christian liberty and freedom in Christ.
