Our thirteenth week of daily devotions in the Book of First John center on the John’s discourse on resisting the world. You’re going to need your Bible and I’ve provided the Study Notes on this website that you can either bookmark, or print. Be sure to scroll down to the notes outlining and commenting on the 1 John 5:3-15. Or you may want to download the word document:1jn5.3-15nn. Friday: 1 John 5:3-15: Loving “In His Name”
Love for God always involves keeping His commandments.
This is a principle John revisits over and over in his writings.
Revisit them yourself:
John 14:19-21, 23; 14:15; 13:34-35; 1 John 4:20-5:3a
But these commandments are not burdensome, especially the command to love our fellow believers!
We can do it! We can love one another with power from above, power we received the moment we believed in the Lord Jesus.
More than that, if we will ask Him to release that power to help us love one another, He will grant our request.
Help Me Love, In Jesus’ Name
1 John 5:14-15 is a great example of what it means to pray in Jesus’ name. It is absolutely His will to love our fellow Christian. He says we can do it because we have His life in us and it is more powerful than the world’s power that resists the will of Christ. Finally, He tells us that if we pray for help to love one another, that prayer will be answered “Yes!” Apply this truth to your life right now if you didn’t on Sunday. Pray with confidence that Jesus will answer your request for help in loving other Christians…especially “that one”!
Break the chain of hatred in your marriage, your family, your church, and your world—write out a specific plan of action for loving the most unlovely child of God in your life today.
Confess—Father, I agree with your condemnation of my excuses for not loving .
Claim—Father, I know you have given me the power to love .
Commit—Father, I expect you to answer my prayer to help me love and tell you now that when the answer comes, I will do what you say.
May the Lord bless you in your obedience to His foremost command to love this person as He has loved you…because you can!
