Jesus Movement Minute: Dependence

Jesus Movement Memory

C. S. Lewis said, “No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good.”

When I think of the revival of the 60s and 70s–the Jesus Movement–I remember knowing that we could not be good.

I really believe that was one of the reasons the Jesus Movement “moved”–our dependence on God rather than ourselves.

Run to Win!

Remember the Olympic Games?

What would you think if when the sprinters lined up and gun went off, six of the athletes ran down the course straining toward the finish line, but four of them casually stood up and walked down their lane waving at the crowd, talking and laughing with one another, listening to their ipods, and passing a big greasy bag of Peanut M&M’s back and forth?

Would you be surprised and maybe even a little appalled at their brash disregard for all the Olympics means to the world? Would you wonder how they could so offhandedly disregard and neglect the great privilege they have as gifted athletes?

If you’re upset, what do you think their teammates must be feeling? What about the countries they represent? Can you imagine the disappointment of their coach, and what he might say to them after the race?

Go for the Gold

Jesus Movement Minute: Lonely Sinners

My understanding of the ministry of the Holy Spirit in my life is that when I sin, He makes me miserable.

Not because God’s ticked off at me, but because He’s grieved.

Why is He grieved? Because God’s love always wants what is best for me. And sin never leads to anything good.

So it’s a gift of grace, this misery. It’s God’s tender mercies wooing me back into His love. All  I need to do is get honest with Him, and rely on His power to move toward what He knows is good for me.

But it’s still misery.

Journaling Tip: Sleepless in LA

From my journal:

“Okay, Lord, it’s 2:30 AM and I’m wide awake. Guess there’s nothing to do but pray.”

Do you struggle with insomnia?

Do you often find yourself roaming the house after midnight, wondering if you’ll ever get to sleep?

Me too. I’ve never been a good sleeper.

You know what you need? More than a new prescription for sleep aids. More than an eating and exercise regimen. More than some sheep to count.

You need a journal!
